Some years ago (maybe ‘04 or 05?) when the winds blew, the rain fell, and the waters rose…a (one time) SC resident named Bill Murray noticed an elderly couple stranded in their car on Route 99 by high water near the bridge over Peterson Branch creek. In an effort to help them to safety he lost his footing and became totally submerged. Some weeks later he was diagnosed with hepatitis. The source was ultimately traced to Clerance Burkes failed levee/sewage operation on Caney Drive, so Bill Murray sued BCSS and won a small award. At the time, I was a part-timer & Mr. Murray was SC’s Security Supervisor & the company we worked for was named Securitas. Although not exactly a random act of kindness at the time, since he was on duty, his sacrifice is notable…as is this cautionary tale.

The other day, while in Wal-Mart I decided to pick up a box of Duraflame logs. Tried to place the 10 log box on the rack at the bottom of the shopping cart and finally ended up on the floor wrestling with, as they say in England, 'the bloody bugger'.

Several people walked by and not one of them offered to assist in placing it on the rack.

The following weekend an elderly man was struggling with his car trunk - it wouldn't open so offered my assistance.

I lived in Spanish Cove from 1991 until spring of 2007 as Lisa Vertregt, my boyfriends name was given there to me. I always experienced the nice people we had in the Cove. My last winter
was the one of 2006/07 with lots of regrets, that I broke up with
Jack. I have a brand new life in a beautiful retirement home in a place in Quebec MAGOG is the town, sold my home 2 months ago.
KJeep in touch with Cove Connections, too all my friends a very healthy & happy 2010.
Love to y'all Lisa

While no a permanent resident, my family had a similar experience in 2007 after we parked our RV, and started to work on our patio and planting tropicals. Neighbors came by to introduce themselves, then even more came over Thanksgiving weekend, who we had not met before who were down for the winter.

When we were preparing to move to Lillian permanently. Dave Danson stood up, introduced himself, shook our hands and welcomed us to Spanish Cove. Thanks Dave!
